MGSV will support custom music for your trips around its massive areas - at least on PC, though I'm under the impression that there'll be something similar on console. Regardless, consider this a challenge to create a mixtape of period specific music. The rules are simple:

  • Even though MGSV is set in the mid 80s, I think anything from the decade and earlier is fair game. No one is going to be policing this, but please keep it within the spirit of the post.
  • Any genre is fair game, pick some weird stuff if you want.
  • Playlists should be not much longer than 60 minutes worth of songs - just so we don't get ridiculous page stretching.
  • I suggest listing out your songs in bullet points with a link to a Spotify playlist in your post that includes those songs so that people can actually listen to them - but you're free to do as you please in posting your music.
  • Have fun. Someone will be policing this rule. You have been warned.

My playlist:

  1. Under Pressure - Queen / David Bowie
  2. Love Is A Battlefield - Pat Benatar
  3. Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears
  4. Welcome Home(Sanitarium) - Metallica
  5. At War With The World - Foreigner
  6. Peace Sells - Megadeth
  7. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
  8. Mother - Danzig
  9. Killer Queen - Queen
  10. Have You Ever Seen The Rain? - CCR
  11. Runnin' With The Devil - Van Halen

All I need.

I've been compiling this youtube playlist for some time now so I'm afraid it's well over the 60 minute mark, but luckilly I don't need to list all of the tracks as they're listed through the link.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLcod52t0kpd_6giGVICQ4DPV1ZSy5FB2

Hopefully some of this is good inspiration, I've gone for a wide range of sources including Soviet and Angolan music, using some unusual tracks by known artists and avoiding artist repeats. All tracks are 1977-1984. Tried to match the dark theme of the game where possible also and use things that would make good helicopter music.

My favourites due to relevance are:
- Echo and the Bunnymen - Higher Hell
- Escape from New York Theme
- Blondie - Warchild
- Tears for Fears - Start of the Breakdown

Avatar image for officer_falcon

Tried to keep everything 1984 or before.

  • The Warrior - Scandal
  • Holding Out for a Hero - Bonnie Tyler
  • You're the Best - Joe Esposito
  • Out of Touch - Hall & Oates
  • Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran
  • Africa - Toto
  • Private Eyes - Hall & Oates
  • Another One Bites the Dust - Queen
  • Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
  • Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce
  • Stayin' Alive - Bee Gees
  • Immigrant Song - Led Zepplin
  • Under My Thumb - The Rolling Stones
  • 99 Luftballons - Nena

The more I think about it, the more I think I'd probably just end up listening to Africa on repeat while roaming around.

And not Union of the Snake? Geddit. Snake. :P

  • Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran

Won't be getting the PC version so I won't be able to do a custom soundtrack but if I was able to it would just be Taylor Swift non-stop.

Avatar image for j05nny5

I am just going to have the helicopter blasting "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-A-Lot over its loudspeaker.

Edit:Whoops

Don't Go - Yaz.

Ah-ha's "Take On Me" already being in the game means I have no need for any other music!

I won't change the soundtrack because a director has vision!

2nd playthrough though, the speed metal MGR:R tracks

I'll probably just do it on a second playthrough, especially to put in 80/70s songs I feel are missing.
If the game is going to go the way I think it's going to go, then Elvis Costello's cynicism would be a nice fit. Get Oliver's Army in there.
Not a big list, but I also have Bizarre Love Triangle and some Duran Duran tracks, like Hungry like the Wolf.

Edit: Oh, and One Night in Bangkok. Can't forget that.

80's right? Easy. Just stick the Vice City soundtrack on.

Probably just rolling with the default soundtrack for my firsr playthrough, but in Ground Zeros I had my helicopter music set to either a K-ON! opening or Before my body is dry from Kill la Kill and that was prettt amazing/hilarious.

Holding out for a hero - Bonnie Tyler

Avatar image for jesus_phish

@demoskinos: If you're getting it on PS4 you can listen to it on Spotify while playing, but now that I think about it I think she took all her music off Spotify?

Holding out for a hero - Bonnie Tyler

This is the best answer

I haven't really thought about a custom soundtrack for the game, but i had made a Cold War and/or 80s themed Playlist for another game that might be somewhat appropriate here

  • Christmas at Ground Zero - Weird Al Yankovic
  • Two Tribes - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
  • One Thing Leads to Another - The Fixx (surprisingly appropriate here, i guess)
  • When the Wind Blows - David Bowie
  • London Calling - The Clash
  • The Safety Dance - Men without Hats
  • Cold War - Devo
  • Going Under - Devo
  • The Earth Dies Screaming - UB40
  • Two Minute Warning - Depeche Mode
  • Bullet The Blue Sky - U2
  • Everybody wants to rule the world - Tears for Fears (unsurprisingly appropriate)
  • Red Rain - Peter Gabriel
  • Games Without Frontiers - Peter Gabriel
  • Leningrad - Billy Joel
  • We Didn't Start The Fire - Billy Joel
  • Silent Running - Mike and the Mechanics
  • Eve of Destruction - Barry McGuire
  • Hammer To Fall - Queen
  • Land of Confusion - Genesis
  • You're The Voice - John Farnham (again, surprisingly appropriate)

and

  • Burning Heart - Survivor

...which indeed would make a good Helicopter Insertion Song

I would want to use Guitar Wolf but sadly they didnt form till 1987.

  • Romancing the Stone - Eddy Grant
  • Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant
  • One Step Beyond - Madness
  • House of Fun - Madness
  • Our House - Madness
  • Town Called Malice - The Jam
  • Set the House Ablaze - The Jam
  • Children of the Revolution - T.Rex
  • It's a Shame - The Spinners
  • Where Eagle's Dare - The Misfits
  • Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
  • Boys are back in Town - Thin Lizzy
  • September - Earth, Wind, and Fire
  • I'm Gonna Be Somebody - Jack Mack & The Heart Attack
  • Super Hero - Tommy Snyder
  • Buckaroo Banzai End March

Now here are a couple made after 84 that I think would fit well:

  • Short Change Hero - The Heavy
  • Survivalism - Nine Inch Nails
  • The Hand the Feeds - Nine Inch Nails
  • Ever lovin' man - The Dirtbombs
  • Take Warning - Operation Ivy
  • Unity - Operation Ivy
  • Epic - Faith No More
  • joker and the thief - Wolfmother
  • anything by Guitar Wolf

Power by Kanye West for my chopper.

Not period appropriate but neither are bipedal tanks and iDroids :3

I'll toy with the idea of my helicopter playing Do They Know It's Christmas whilst I fulton half-a-dozen African kids against their will.

If Elegia by New Order isn't used in the game as the final song during some climactic moment when the bell tolls at the 3:00 mark then I will be very disappointed. I had never heard of New Order before the 2015 E3 trailer used it and I'm just getting into some of the great stuff they made in the 80's. I will say that Elegia is a song that couldn't be farther from what the that band was about though. Considering that song was written as a tribute to their deceased friend and former band mate from Joy Division, the song's tone makes sense. Even if you take into account the ridiculous guitar solo that is belted out over the course of 6 minutes on a 17 minute song.

I knew I recognised that song when I heard it in the trailer! It was used for one of the best short films I've ever seen, More:

Also I finally put together my list. Currently just under an hour, and I can't decide if I want to cut some of the more pop-y tracks for additional ripping guitar or music more in the vein of the trailers.

  • Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears
  • Africa - Toto
  • Out of Touch - Hall & Oates
  • Take On Me - a-ha
  • Holding out for a Hero - Bonnie Tyler
  • Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
  • Hungry Like The Wolf - Duran Duran
  • Owner of a Lonely Heart - Yes
  • Pale Shelter - Tears For Fears
  • Atomic - Blondie
  • Cum on Feel The Noize - Quiet Riot
  • Here's To You - Joan Baez
  • Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams
  • The Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy

Everything is around '84 or earlier. I think that link should work, let me know if it doesn't.

  • Psycho Killer- Talking Heads

Not a single mention of having your helicopter land to the theme of Airwolf?

It's absolutely the most 80s thing with a helicopter in it that I can think of.

Avatar image for audiosnow

I'm gonna play to one song and one song only:

Avatar image for blackout62

Just going off my own music collection which why I'm too lazy to post links. The logic with most of these is getting songs that make sense with this place in MGS while also being something I'd want to listen to while dragging myself through a big open world for three minutes between fights.

It was either going to be all Bowie or no Bowie.

  • "Ivan Meets G.I. Joe" by The Clash: Step 1; Find a Clash song that isn't "Rock The Casbah". Great song, actually just the plot of Footloose set in Iran. "Ivan Meets G.I. Joe" is kind of a great Big Boss song though. It's about obvious symbols of the US and Soviet Union getting in a disco dance off so MGS3, it's on their album Sandinista! so Peace Walker, and there's tons of great 80s arcade sounds in the background so MGSV and just video games in general. In practice I probably have a separate playlist that's just Clash songs. Tsk, damn that nine year coma. The Clash probably could have convinced Big Boss that a soldier's haven was a terrible idea.
  • "Heroes and Villains" by The Beach Boys
  • "The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel: 5:43 of gentle "gotten roughed up but gonna stay standing and fighting". Come on D-horse, let's go get revenge.
  • "Make Your Own Kind of Music" by The Mamas and The Papas: You do your thing Snake, no matter how many people probably will die along the way.
  • "L'Arena" by Ennio Morricone: What's that Kojima? You and Ocelot are pretending you can make Afghanistan Wild West-ey? Well I guess I'd better get out my one all purpose Morricone track.
  • "Straight to Hell" by The Clash: Secret perfect Miller backstory song, deploy!
  • "Flying" by The Beatles: Maybe the best song I have for a point A to B open world trudge.
  • "Let's Spend The Night Together by The Rolling Stones: Any buddy fight music.
  • "Break on Through to The Other Side" by The Doors: Outer Heaven, heh, heh, *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*
  • "Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones: I thought I could find something more tasteless for Africa than "Africa".
  • "The Electric Co." by U2: People getting electrocuted; cornerstone of MGS, right? I know your angry but the before 1984 rule really tempted me to put in some early U2. In retrospect I should have just used "Sunday Bloody Sunday" (Bleh!) and not have to explain why.
  • "Sympathy for The Devil" by The Rolling Stones: Oh Big Boss, you so evil.
  • "Fortunate Son" by Credence Clearwater Revival: That helicopter needs entrance music.

@demoskinos: you can on the ps3 version, that is, if your willing to sacrifice graphics.

There is only one song that I will ride into battle to.

Avatar image for galacticpunt

Unless I messed up somewhere, I was ruthless in only using songs that came out from 1975-1984 so Snake would be catching up on where music had gone. Many of my choices are thematically in tune with where I think this game is going.

Really deep cut throwing shade on the other Tuesday release: "Mad Max" aka "Bad Life" by PiL.

Deep cut but I think "Dont Mess (With the US)" by Suburban All Stars is a good one for extraction. Jeff Gerstmann's character in that song is basically Big Boss and is "about to go solo like Mario Van Peebles"
